I recently came across the following poem by Rabindranath Tagore for the first time. It articulates a beautiful aspiration for any country, and for me personally as well. Though I acknowledge that existence of a just society has a lot to do with the laws and policies that govern it, good laws will never be sufficient to ensure good community. It’s sometimes, but not always, clear what to do on a societal level to make things better, but it usually is on a personal level. Each of us affects others more than we realize, and to the extent that we achieve our own potential, we help and inspire others to do the same.
Where The Mind Is Without Fear
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
